When we started creating content at 23dB Productions, we didn’t stress over the gear we didn’t have — we focused on making the most of what was within reach.
For me, that was a $250 Zoom H4 recorder. No bells, no whistles — just passion and persistence. I used it to capture the live bands I was already mixing, constantly pushing myself to find the sweet spot in the sound. For months, I recorded every show, not to go viral, but to get better.
Eventually, I began asking artists if I could post their performances on my YouTube channel. I started sharing those links on LinkedIn. That’s when it clicked: social media rewards consistency. The more you show up, the more you’re seen.
About eight months later, I got a DM from none other than Grammy-winning bassist Christian McBride. He’d heard one of those H4 recordings — and just like that, I was offered a role as his front-of-house engineer.
That moment changed everything. Not because I had the best gear — but because I kept showing up and delivering with what I had.
